In the United Kingdom, a census was taken every 10 years starting from 1801. With the exception of 1941 due to the Second World War, the census kept a very good idea of the current population and assisted in predicting futures sizes. Population data for years prior to the census was provided from directories and gazetteers as many churches took number on the size of its inhabitants. Estimated in the 1500s, Scotland had a population of 500,000 persons, and according to the 2011 census, the country has reached an extraordinary 5,295,000 persons. As of 2012, the birth rate was 11 births/1,000 people and a death rate of 10.5 deaths/1,000 people – this suggests that the population growth is rather relaxed since almost as many are born and die†¦show more content†¦The ratio of male to female has roughly been the same for the last seventy years, in favor of the females- 51%:49%. Divided amongst three age groups, Scotland has split the population by work-status; 17% aged unde r 16 (unable to work full-time), 65% aged 16-64 (potentially full-time workers) and 18% aged 65 and over (retirees). Furthermore, the end-tail of the retiree column has been growing in recent times as the number of males over 100 years of age has more than doubled between the years of 2003 and 2013. Formerly only 60 persons reached this age in a generation have now escalated to 130 males. The females, starting off substantially higher than the males, have risen as well. In 2003, there were 470 females over the age of 100 in a single generation. That number is now 720 during the same period as the 130 males. Obviously on a global scale, developed nations are living longer due to better health, better lifestyles and also medical assistance. These figures do not go into detail whether these men and women are free or are in a vegetative state, being kept alive via machine. Although not the main reason why the nation’s older population is living longer, it is certainly a contribu ting factor that Scotland s leading causes of death- including cancer, coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke- are declining and stem from the impact of lifestyle

The expectations for this assignment were to interview a young child between grades one and eight. I interviewed a child who is currently in the fifth grade and is nine years of age. For the purposes of confidentiality, she will be expressed as Grace Campbell. I decided to interview Grace because I knew that she is a very mature and intuitive little girl. The interview with Grace took place at her dance studio; Brooklin Dance Academy. I ensured that we could proceed with the interview with very little to no distractions. Throughout this essay I will be exploring the concept of switching rolls and understanding a child’s perspective of their learning in contrast to my own narrative. Capital is a major concern while staring a business. I considered a number of sources for capital. The first source I considered was from my parents and other family members. Its almost a guarantee that I can get a small loan of up to $3,000 dollars from my parents with no interest requirement during payment. Also it is not likely for them to issue a time limit for the repayment of the loan so that would be a good and viable source of funds. Another source of capital for the business could be from venture capital firms. This might be especially difficult to get as I have to convince the venture capital firms that my business is worth investing into. One likely venture capital firm is Australian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association Limited (AVCAL). One major requirement is that for them to invest in a business the business take advantage of digital marketing and sales. In this regard, I have decided to open a website for this that will explain what the music academy is all about, its vision and mission. From this firm I look forward to getting around a $10000 financing. (AVCAL, 2016). Another way of getting capital is from business administration offices in the country. One such administrative office is the Business Victoria. From their sponsored websites, the most ideal would be from Get business Sponsored which only charges a variable interest rate of 0.75% per month (Get Finance, 2016). Hence the accumulated interest would not be too much to repay. Taking a loan of $8,000 would accumulate interest of $720 after a year. I look forward to sustainable revenues after two years and plan to make arrangements with the firm after two years whereby the accumulated debt would be $9440. Am also considering to get a loan from banks. A loan of $5000 would be great. Assuming a 7.5% per month (Canster, 2016) interest rate for a period of 2 years, the cumulative debt would be $14000. Part of the payment could come from the music academy assuming its making money by then. If not, I could use my car as collateral. I could also get the remaining ($4000) amount by taking a loan from my friends. If I am not able to repay the debt from profits from the business one way of repaying the amount would be from the sale of some of my rarely used items such as old items such as phones, music players or clothes. Another important thing in starting this music company is finding an office that will be used as the base of operations. The site Commercial Real Estate provides great options (Commercial, 2016). One suitable office would be at the Colliners International. It is spacious with about 700 sq. ft. Also it is well lit with enough windows. However, it being on the ground floor means that one is able to clearly hear traffic which is a distraction. Its cost too is also high at $2000 per month. The Grosvenor Place is another great option. With offices with an average square footage of 800 sq. ft. it is very spacious. The cost of the office is also relatively low at $1200. However, there is no elevator which makes using the stairs inconveniencing. Then there is the Cadigal. It is relatively cheap too at $1000 and is also spacious at 800 sq. ft. However, it being far from the city center may make delivery of various goods to the business difficult. There is also the offices at Mirvac. There is minimal traffic in the area so there will be minimal distractions and the monthly rent is also relatively cheap at $800 per month. However, it is not spacious at only 400 sq. ft. Finally, there are the offices at 580 George Street. They are very spacious at 1000 sq. ft. and are located in a serene surrounding. However, the offices here are very expensive at $1500 a month. Taking all these into consideration, offices at the Grosvenor Place seem like the best option. They are not expensive and are spacious. A lack of an elevator is a small price to pay for that. Did LaGrou knowingly engage in the improper storage of meat, poultry, and other food products, in violation of federal food safety laws? Rule of Law To control the shipment, storage and distribution of contaminated food, the government created the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA). It is a federal statute that conforms to the safe creation and distribution of cosmetics, drugs, and medical devices (p. 94). Facts of the Case LaGrou Distribution Systems, Incorporated, operated a cold storage warehouse and distribution center in Chicago, Illinois. The warehouse stored raw, fresh, and frozen meat, poultry, and other food products that were owned by customers who paid LaGrou to do so. Over 2 million pounds of food went into and out of the warehouse each day. The warehouse had a rat problem for a considerable period of time. LaGrou workers consistently found rodent droppings and rodent-gnawed products, and they caught rats in traps throughout the warehouse on a daily basis. The problem became so that workers were assigned to â€Å"rat patrols† to search for rats and to put out traps to catch rats. At one point, the rat patrols were trapping as many as 50 rats per day. LaGrou did not inform its customers of the rodent infestation. LaGrou would throw out product that has been gnawed by rats but tell the customers that the product was thrown out because of the warehouse damage such as torn boxes and forklift mishaps. LaGrou employees, as a joke, would write â€Å"MM† for Mickey Mouse on product that was infested. One day, a food inspector for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) went to the LaGrou warehouse and discovered the rat problem. The following morning, 14 USDA inspectors and representatives of the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) arrived at the warehouse to begin an extensive investigation. The inspectors found the extensive rat infestation and the contaminated meat. The contaminated meat could transmit bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal pathogens, including E. oli and Salmonella, which could cause severe illness in human beings. The USDA ordered the warehouse shutdown. Of the 22 million pounds of meat, poultry, and other food products stored at the warehouse, 8 million pounds were found to be adulterated and were destroyed. The remaining product had to be treated with strict decontamination procedures. The U. S. government brought charges against LaGr ou for violating federal food safety laws. The U. S. District Court ordered LaGrou to pay restitution of $8. 2 million to customers who lost product and to pay a $2 million fine, and it sentenced LaGrou to a five-year term of probation. LaGrou appealed. Plaintiff’s Position The management of Lagrou Distribution Systems, Incorporated failed to execute what is stated in the contract. The fact that the company president, manager, and several employees were aware of the situation and did not take the proper action to fix the problem. In fact, the management tried to hide the rat infestation by giving false information to the customers. Defendant’s Position The management claimed that the rodent activity was located in a small area of the basement and not spread out in the warehouse. LaGrou management requested that all the charges against them be dismissed because of their claim that there was no privity of contract existed between the company and the plaintiff. â€Å"Privity of contract is a doctrine of contract law that prevents any person from seeking the enforcement of the contract, or suing on its terms, unless they are a party to that contract (Duhaime, 2004). Brief Review of Court Ruling In reference to the U. S. Court of Appeals ruling, LaGrou Distribution Systems, Incorporated was in violation of federal food safety laws regarding safe and sanitary storage of meat, poultry, and other food products. The court ordered the defendant to pay the penalty of $2 million and was reduced to $1. 5 million. Student Analysis As a senior level, decision-making manager, full responsibility rest upon our shoulder. We are held accountable for whatever decision we make. In the case of LaGrou Distribution Systems, Incorporated, the senior management consented to bad practices where safety of the employees and the consumers is at stake. Such bad practices will not be successful and the end result will be an expensive court battle. The management should abide whatever the agreement on the contract is. Whatever has promised must be delivered. The rat infestation should be dealt with as soon as it was brought out to the attention of the management. Expert personnel should be consulted and proper guidelines and procedures should be followed in dealing with problem like this. Basing the decision of the district court on the complaint made by the plaintiff against the defendant, the judgment is fair and just because the company consented to the bad practices performed by top management and employees. The management knowingly stored meat, poultry, and other food products under unsanitary conditions. A case like this should not be taking for granted and the company should be held liable for the wrongdoing they ever did. To be successful in business, good business ethics should be exercised starting from top management down to the employees.
